St Patrick’s Day is on the way. Whether you’re a seasoned local or a first-timer, we’ve got the inside tips on where to go and where not to go in Dublin for St Patrick’s Day, and what to do if someone mistakenly calls it St Patty’s Day.
Where to Go
The eagerly awaited St Patrick’s Festival runs from March 15th to 19th. There’s a load of great things to do in Dublin City for all ages, including the Festival Parade beginning at noon on St Patrick’s Day. This year’s parade is being led by Game of Thrones star Liam Cunningham, who proudly announced: “It’s a huge honour to be invited back to lead the parade on our national holiday. I’m really looking forward to being a part of it.” Our advice: get there (very!) early, and bring snacks and water – if you move, your spot will be swallowed by the crowd in no time!
If you’re looking for a pint of Guinness, any of the pubs in Dublin City will be happy to oblige. Keep an eye out for the more traditional (but not ‘traditional’) pubs – they’re always cosier and have a great atmosphere.
Where to Avoid
The city will be packed with people decked out in all sorts of green things. If you don’t feel like braving the crowds, you can catch the Parade live on RTÉ Player. For a slightly quieter but equally exciting atmosphere, catch the DART to one of the suburban towns and catch a local parade. They don’t throw sweets out to the audience like they used to, but they’re still great fun for all ages!
What to Wear
Something green. Irish jerseys are encouraged, as is face paint, and novelty sunglasses are always a hit. Before you ask, the answer is yes; ‘Kiss me I’m Irish’ and similar slogan t-shirts are officially uncool, and ‘If found, return to the pub’ is definitely not original! Pro-tip: layers are key. The weather could go either way (remember Storm Emma?) and you’d be wise to have a jumper and a jacket, just in case.
Paddy’s, Not Patty’s
Let’s clear this up once and for all: Paddy is short for Patrick, and a Patty is another name for a burger. We know you want to get involved, and we appreciate the enthusiasm, but if you hear someone making that mistake, let them know – for Paddy’s sake.
